Good News: Molecular Remission
September 9, 2008
- We got the good news yesterday that the P210 BCR/ABL mutation, which has been causing my leukemia, is no longer detectable (via the most sensitive PCR/molecular test). This means that I am now definitely in remission and that the transplant (with its graft vs. leukemia effect) and my ongoing consumption of Sprycel/dasatinib (the oral chemo/tyrosine kinase inhibitor) seems to be working.
- After 10 months of this battle against leukemia, it’s a tremendous relief to have made it to this stage. We’re mindful of the fact that relapse remains a possibility: even though my leukemia seems to be gone, there’s always a chance that a rogue, undetected mutation (or several) is still lurking, and trying to restart the leukemia. That said, getting to molecular remission is a key step towards getting to a cure (which is generally defined as remaining in remission for 5 years). All in all, we are feeling grateful and positive.
- We’re also trying to get organized to make our departure from Seattle. Due to my recent bout of infections (and the the complex cocktail of IV medications that I continue to need to receive), the team here wants to give it a bit more time before they set a definite discharge date, particularly since I will be needing to work with a new hematologist/oncologist in the DC area for my post transplant care. At this point, we hope to be leaving Seattle by the end of September. Fingers crossed.
- SCCA will be keeping me busy with a full schedule of check-out tests and evaluations over the next few days/weeks. I was glad today to get through my last lumbar puncture with intrathecal chemo. I sure won’t miss those.
- The girls returned to Hutch School yesterday and are happy seeing their old teachers and old and new friends. We’re eager to get them into their new school in Maryland ASAP, but are grateful as always that the Hutch School is here when we need it.
- We also are deeply grateful for all of the support that all of you continue to demonstrate. Thanks for helping us to get this far.

Dear Roger, Lisa, Mimi & Izzy,
That is fantastic news!!! We are soooo very happy for all of you! The mantra of ‘happy cells, happy cells’, the wonderful care from the staff of the SCCA–(I have not come across anything close to the care provided at SCCA), being one of the lucky ones,& the warm thoughts, positive energy & prayers from your family and friends, in addition to a positive attitude, got you through this challenging ordeal. You’re a strong man with a wonderful family. Again, we are sharing in your amazing remission! Best of luck! The SCCA is already scheduling John’s return to Seattle for a yearly visit. I can’t say I’m looking forward to it, but almost feel as if we will be jinxed, if we don’t go back to the place that cured him.
You will remain in our thoughts and yes, prayers.
Love, Ann Marie, John & Liam

HIP HIP HOORAY!
I hear that Maryland in the Fall is really beautiful (even if it means you have to get movers and unpack boxes)
We will keep our fingers crossed that the most worrisome thing you have to do at the end of September is find a new dry cleaners and grocery store in Chevy chase

Another HALLELUJAH and AMEN!!! What wonderful news. I about knocked Bill off his perch, calling down from the loft with the good news. So glad to hear that you’ve had your last “puncture.” Our fingers are crossed, too, for departure at September’s end and meeting that new dr. who will care for you in DC. Can’t wait to tell the church group whose prayer list you’ve been on. Love to all.

I’ve been sitting quietly here at my computer thanking God for your good news. I’m reminded of a verse of Amazing Grace that says: “Through many dangers, toils, and snares, I have already come; ‘Tis grace that brought me safe thus far, and grace will lead me home.”
I will pray for your progress toward moving and getting settled in Maryland, for your continued remission, and for strength and good health for the “journey”.
Love,
Gail

We are so happy to read your most recent posting, Roger! Getting your infections under control enabling you to move cross country to your new home sounds like the next big hurdle and hopefully you are getting good news on that front as you grow stronger every day. We are so happy for you, Lisa and the girls. We’ll watch for future news.
Cheers,
Judy and Tom
